Finland Will Become the First Country in the World to Get Rid of All School Subjects

Finland’s education system is considered one of the best in the world. In international ratings, it’s always in the top ten. However, the authorities there aren’t ready to rest on their laurels, and they’ve decided to carry through a real revolution in their school system.

Finnish officials want to remove school subjects from the curriculum. There will no longer be any classes in physics, math, literature, history, or geography.

The head of the Department of Education in Helsinki, Marjo Kyllonen, explained the changes:
“There are schools that are teaching in the old-fashioned way which was of benefit in the beginning of the 1900s — but the needs are not the same, and we need something fit for the 21st century.“

Instead of individual subjects, students will study events and phenomena in an interdisciplinary format. For example, the Second World War will be examined from the perspective of history, geography, and math. And by taking the course ”Working in a Cafe," students will absorb a whole body of knowledge about the English language, economics, and communication skills.

This system will be introduced for senior students, beginning at the age of 16. The general idea is that the students ought to choose for themselves which topic or phenomenon they want to study, bearing in mind their ambitions for the future and their capabilities. In this way, no student will have to pass through an entire course on physics or chemistry while all the time thinking to themselves “What do I need to know this for?”

The traditional format of teacher-pupil communication is also going to change. Students will no longer sit behind school desks and wait anxiously to be called upon to answer a question. Instead, they will work together in small groups to discuss problems.

The Finnish education system encourages collective work, which is why the changes will also affect teachers. The school reform will require a great deal of cooperation between teachers of different subjects. Around 70% of teachers in Helsinki have already undertaken preparatory work in line with the new system for presenting information, and, as a result, they’ll get a pay increase.

The changes are expected to be complete by 2020.

What do you think about all these ideas? I’d love to hear your opinion, so let us know in the comments.

The Finland's new education system is revolucionary. It changes everything we know about how to study. They have decided to remove subjects and the students will have to work in small groups to solve a few phenomenons in which they will have to mix some subjects as maths, history or economy.

In my opinion this idea is brilliant. School is supposed to teach us things that are useful in our laboral future, but most of the time we have to study things that we are not going to use in our entire lifes. And I think that is very demotivating because you don't want to lose your time studying something useless when you can learn other things that are more interesting but are not teached in school.

I don't have many arguments against this system, but working always on teams is not that productive as it seems. That may lead to some students solving the problems always and others just watching. Also the competitiveness is not good all the time. Another small problem is that this system has to be imposed after a common education system in which we have to study for exams because we need to know something before apply it.

In conclusion I think this system is great because it teach us real life skills that are going to be useful in our lifes, and that is what school is made for.

I think the ideas that propose Finland about a new school system are very interesting. It would be able to suppose a big change for education. It’s very important to students feeling motivated studying things that they really want and they are interested about it because, most of the time, students feel that they are studying because they are obligated but they know that most of the things that they are studying are going to be useless in their future. So, I think it’s a great idea allow to students to choose different topics to study keep their future in mind.

About teamwork in small groups, I think it can be a good idea because students can help themselves and they can learn important skills for their future, when they will have a job for example, as to talk respecting different opinions or points of view or to be less shy.

To sum up, I think this new system of education is a good option to motivated students and teach them important skills that are going to be useful in their lives.

I like this model of education but I think that it has some negative points.
On the one hand, I think that this model is easier to learn because the teenagers will study in a more general way and they could study whatever they want.
On the other hand, I think that this model has a bad things because the competivity isn't good.
In conclusion I think that this model of education is better than our model, because it creates interest with the teenagers, but it has its problems too.

Finland has always been a country where having an open mind is something usual, so the Finnish government accept the the citizens’ suggestions and make use of those one that they consider effective. As a result, they are constantly in progress and it makes them have a big advantage over the rest of Europe, as the educational system.

I personally think that the finnish system is something incredible and enviable by the rest of the countries. They consider that the key to the educational success is working in groups, the replacement of subjects by interdisciplinary projects and the simulation of the daily life in order to apply the different knowledges. All this techniques should be considered by countries like Spain where the unemployment is really worrying. As Finland needed a change in the way they teach, Spain also requires it now and students need to learn according to what they live day by day, for example: we live in a stressful atmosphere, so students should be taught how to breath and how to control different stifling situations. Or they also should learn how to defend themselves against a robber or a kidnapper. These knowledges has become so important in our daily life besides Maths, Literature or History.

All in all, I believe that the Finnish system will have very good results in a future and it wont have been a bad choice. If the rest of the governments apply this new techniques and skills, they wont regret and the next generations will make the world a better place thanks to the skills that they learnt at the right time.

In my opinion this idea is brilliant! School is supposed to teach us things that will be useful for our near, and late future, but most of the time we study things that we Will not use during oír lifetime, And I think that this point is very demotivating because you don't want to be wasting your time studying something you know you wont need for the future, when we should be studying subjects that will be more useful for our future, depending on the Path we take.

I don't have many arguments against this system, but working in teams is not always as good as it seems. That may lead to some students solving the problems and the others just sitting and watching.

In conclusion I think this system is great because it can teach usbskills that will be useful in our lifes, future and present and that is what school is made for!

The Finland's education method is a new way for students to learn with more motivation and enthusiasm. If it works correctly, learnings skills will change.

Firstly, it can be a very good system because teenagers would not have to study subjects which they do not like them. They want to focus in essential subjects that they need to know in order to their future. They would learn useful skills for their job instead of learning things that are not interesting for their lifes.

Moreover, they work in small groups doing more practical projects than tests, so they have to look for information by themselves rather than memorizing things which they will forget them in a period of time.

To sum up, I think that this system can be a great idea to teach useful things in a effective way because it awaken interest of youngster to learn.

Finland wants to change the method of study so that students have more excitement and enthusiasm when studying a subject.

On the one hand, in Finland, when a person chooses what they want to study, you have subjects of what you want to dedicate and don't consider those who won't be using in that work. There should also be subjects engaged in everyday life, such as paying bills or housework.

On the other hand, I think that it isn't a good idea to do work in group, some students would work more than others. They may work in pairs so that the work is best divided and both contribute with their ideas.

In conclusion, I think that all countries would have to make the same changes as Finland, students choosing the subjects they want to study and having greater joy and illusion by approving and study.

  9. Findland's education is the best in the world because use modern methods to improve the education system and they are very useful for the future of the students because they can choose the job that they want. Anyway, other people said that the methods that use finnish isn't faborable to the students.

On the one hand, most people think that all countries should start to use the Findland's methods of education because students study things that they like it and it will be important to prepare the students to work in the job that they want. Too, the students will work together to solve the exercises, problems, etc...

On the other hand, there are people that think this way is bad, because think that if the students have knowledge about all the subjects and do very exercises they will get a good job.

In short, most of people think the Findland's education is the best in the world and other people think that it isn't good. In my opinion, the Findland's education is the best because it prepare us to our future working life.

  10. Javi Jiménez Almodóvar.
Many people think that Findland's education is the best in the world, because the use modern methods and new techniques to improve the education of their students but, is it really the best way of education?

On the one hand I consider that the education system that we have here in Spain is good because students learn about everything, and when we are older we can choose between differents options like Economy or Science for instance. Also I think that the best way to evaluate students is with exams because students learn how to work under pressure, and they can show to the teachers their differents abilities.

But on the other hand it's true that work in groups and work using differents technologies as a computer or an Ipad can be better than using old books, because with the computers and all this technologies also you can search information on internet, and also you learn how to use this apps that you are going to use a lot in you future work.ç

So in conclusion, I believe that we have to study the same subjects that we have now in Spain and also continue with the exams but doing more colectives works and using more new technologies too, because they are very important to our future.

Finland's education system is considered one of the best in the world. However, authorities have decided to change the educational system for a better one.

Firstly, students will study events and phenomena in a interdisciplinary format instead of individual subjects. I think it is a good idea because they will can understand better the topics they study if they examine them from differents points of view.

Moreover, students ought to choose for themselves which topic they want to study. I believe it has advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, it is good because if they study what they want, they will be more motivated to study. On the other hand, I think there are essential things we have to know even if we don't like them.

Another new change is that students will work toguether in smalls groups to discuss problems. From my point of view, this is good for students because they can learn a lot exchanging opinions. However, I think we also have to learn how to work in an individual way, not only in groups.

To sum up, I think Finland is going to do good changes in education and others countries should also improve their educational system.

I think It's an incredible idea for many teenagers so they dont have to study many subjects and the finland's new system will revolutionate everything we know.
On the one hand, it's something that we have never seen here and you can think is better than your education system because it's something new and I think It can help to study because its another form to teach us.
On the other hand, I believe our system is better because if you choose your subjects, you couldn't preparate for your future in others senses. For example, if you dont study history, you couldnt know when it invented the first car or something like that.
In conclusion, I think Its a New form of teaching the differents subjects and its a small revolution but it's not the best form to preparate the teenagers for the future.

  13. I like this system of education, because there are new methods which encourage the teenagers to study more.

On the one hand, I think that this form of education is fantastic and it could be formed for the future. This is a form easier and better than others, that teenagers do with other systems of education.

On the other hand, also, I think that the students could learn more compared to others students, in others countries, because they work in small groups.
Although this is not always good, because, from my point of view they don´t all work equally.

In conclusion, the new system of education, for me, is a great idea, because the girls and boys go to school very happy, with the idea of preparing for the future, using technical skills easier and more interesting.

In my opinion, education nowadays doesn’t work as it should. Society changes everyday, we change everyday, so education must change too. Talking about Finland’s system, I find some disadvantages and some advantages.

On the one hand, I think that subjects help us to organise knowledge. Students will feel confused if they try to learn Maths while they study History. Also, I think that working in groups is not such a good idea. I mean, it’s good for children because they learn how to deal with other people’s opinion, but they also need to learn how to think by theirselves.

On the other hand, as I said before, our education system is wrong. It teaches students things that they won’t need in their lifes. Nowadays, pupils get bored with automathic lessons and boring teachers and they just want to feel like they are being part of the class. This needs to change as soon as possible. Maybe if we don’t clasify knowledge, we’ll understand everything so much better.

To sum up, I think that maybe Finnish method will change everything. I have high hopes because, after all, they have one of the best education systems in the world.
